Chinese Etiquette

Class Project: GRDS 724 media practice

Chinese etiquette

Welcome to my guide to China. This information is useful for anyone interested in Chinese culture, manners, etiquette, and values and those who want to understand the Chinese people better. You may be going to China on business, for a visit or even hosting a Chinese colleague or clients in your own country. Let me talk about the story of Chinese etiquette. This project asks the audience to imagine they’re on a Delta flight. When you fly to China, it will take 14 hours; this is a good time to learn about the culture you will be visiting.

The goal for this class is using different media to represent the concept. This project focuses on cultural heritage by exploring the history and methods of media design.

For the design process, in the very beginning of this project, Professor Merrick gave us a requirement of incorporating heritage. The objective of the project was to develop a concept based on analyses and process.

The research was conducted in four areas, including mind map, key words, mood board, portal type and design testing. As you can see in my process book, I came up with the idea of using wine to explore the deeper methodology in Chinese culture. I really enjoy the process of the design method; even though I get stuck sometimes, it never brothers me, like the journey in design.

For design goals, knowing about Chinese culture is essential for cultivating friendships and business relationships with Chinese. The message of this visual project is to help people who want understand the Chinese culture, manners, etiquette and values in terms of different media communication. Furthermore, it will stimulate people who travel to China to think about presenting the essence of Chinese table manners through historical culture.

For design layout and development: the final design for this project is to combine print and digital media to represent my idea of Chinese etiquette. The purpose of this combination is to bring humanistic and realistic elements into a visual outcome, with the hope of giving audiences a better information experience and having a profound influence on their understanding of the displayed topic. The color, typography, and materials I choose for Chinese etiquette come from my mood board that I put on the wall. The illustration I drew is based on the objective of table manners. The concept for the logo of Chinese etiquette comes from traditional Chinese stamps, which represent feelings of history, culture and heritage.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed the journey of this media class and exploring different ways of thinking within different media. What I learned from this class is that media is the message and is a powerful tool in information communication. As designers, we need to understand which media is the most important way to represent our ideas with clarity and simplicity.
