The Crystal Goblet

Within the last hundred years or so, the Chinese have begun to read and write from right to left rather than from top to bottom. These changes are due to changes in technology as well as western influence. However, function is lost when presenting traditional Chinese in a new way.

Goal: combine type and image to create meaning in communications design through a variety of media explorations.

Design Research: with developing technology, typography becomes more legible and simple. How to communicate well is a big trend in typography.

Design Process: First of all, Professor DiGioia gave us an article called “The Crystal Goblet,” written by Beatrice Warde, and then he asked us to find another article; the one I found is “The New Typography” by Jan Tschichold. In both of these articles, the authors discuss the trend in typography in terms of function and communication as well as the role modernism plays in typography. Beatrice Warde uses The Crystal Goblet as a metaphor to argue that good communication means it is easier for the audience to get the main information from the type. Also, author Jan Tschichold mentions a similar idea, that typography should be clean and pure. The purpose of the typography is clarity.
